Carbon Management

Carbon Management

Carbon management is the process of managing the carbon emissions associated with your business. Carbon management is applicable to a wide variety of business activities, products and services and can vary depending on the size of your business and the sector you operate in. Whether you operate in a simple office environment, light manufacturing or large industrial then your business will be producing carbon emissions. Understanding your carbon emissions will ensure that you remain compliant with all applicable legislation and there are often a variety of financial savings, operational and reputational opportunities that can be attained by proactively managing your carbon emissions.

GEP can help your business to undertake its mandatory or voluntary Carbon and GHG Reporting, establish your Carbon Footprint or provide you with Carbon Management Training to equip you with the tools and information needed to measure and manage your business’ carbon emissions.

Carbon and GHG Reporting

Carbon and GHG Reports are released by businesses of all types, sizes and sectors, from every corner of the world. There are a number of mandatory and voluntary Carbon and GHG Reporting schemes that we are currently supporting clients with, including:

  • Mandatory Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions Reporting: quoted companies are required to report their annual GHG emissions in their Director’s Report.
  • Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC): a mandatory reporting scheme for public and private sector organisations that are high energy users.
  • Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP): companies can voluntarily report on key environmental risks including Climate Change, Supply Chain, Water and Forests.

There are a number of benefits that can be achieved from reporting on carbon including: enabling investors and stakeholders to understand the business’s true value through both financial and non-financial performance, benchmarking carbon efficiency against competitors and reassuring, retaining and attracting investors and stakeholders.

We are successfully working with a number of customers to improve their overall carbon performance and to improve their carbon reporting scores, minimise business risks and maximise on improvement opportunities.

Carbon Footprinting

The Carbon Footprint of a business is defined as “the amount of greenhouse gases (GHG) produced to directly and indirectly support business activities”, and it is expressed in terms of tons CO2e. To calculate its carbon footprint a business will need to collect data about its business, such as energy consumption, water consumption, waste production, business mileage, and convert this data into the tons CO2e.

This can be a complex process to undertake and requires a good understanding of carbon governance, management and accounting systems, data interrogation and suitable carbon footprinting software. GEP can help you to:

  • Identify and understand the scope of your carbon footprint
  • Collect and collate data in the correct format for calculating your carbon footprint
  • Review, select and understand an appropriate carbon footprinting calculation methodology
  • Undertake carbon footprinting calculations
  • Identify and manage any business risks whilst maximising on improvement opportunities
