Waste Management

Waste Management

Waste management is the process of managing waste from its creation to its final disposal. This includes duty of care, waste hierarchy, segregation, treatment, storage, disposal, recycling, documentation and record keeping. It also encompasses the legal and regulatory framework that relates to waste management.

Effective waste management can help you to improve your business’s environmental performance and reduce costs. Whether you’re looking to secure better waste contracts, improve controls over waste contractors, maximise value from your waste streams or understand waste legislation then we have a range of services and training that can be customised to your business needs.

Waste Contracts Specification

Competition for waste management services is very intense in most parts of the UK, allowing choice from a wide range of waste management and recycling companies. Whilst it may appear that this may complicate the procurement process it actually means that there are a wide variety of options for the selection of a waste management and recycling company that is environmentally responsible, compliant, reliable and cost effective.

If you are looking to improve your business’s environmental performance and reduce costs, then it is well worth looking at your existing waste contract(s) and identifying whether you are getting the service you require. If you think there is scope for improvement, then GEP can provide advice on how to:

  • Secure better waste contract(s);
  • Improve controls over waste contractors;
  • Maximise value from your waste streams;
  • Reduce the cost of your waste contract(s).

Compliance and Auditing

There is a wide variety of waste UK and European legislation covering all aspects of waste management, including: duty of care, waste hierarchy, segregation, treatment, storage, disposal, recycling, documentation and record keeping.

The most effective way of ensuring that your business remains compliant with all waste legislation is to develop and maintain a Legal Register which identifies the waste legislation relevant to your business and the controls your business has implemented to ensure compliance. Once you have identified the relevant legislation and implemented controls then it is recommended that your business undertakes regular audits to ensure continued compliance.

If you need help to understand waste legislation, assess your compliance or undertake internal audits then GEP can:

  • Undertake a waste assessment review to identify all relevant legislation and recommend appropriate controls;
  • Develop a Legal Register bespoke to your business;
  • Provide a Legal Register update service on a quarterly, bi-annual or annual frequency;
  • Establish an audit programme and/or undertake first or second party audits on your behalf
