Crieff Hydro - Energy Reduction Project

Crieff Hydro - Energy Reduction Project

Crieff Hydro is a 4-star activity and leisure hotel complex in Crieff, Perthshire forming part of a family of hotels throughout Scotland and England. The group prioritises their environmental responsibility and enlisted help to ensure targeted energy saving measures were implemented to maximize their impact.

GEP Environmental carried out a high-level survey looking at the opportunities for energy and resource savings to be made within the estate. The two main areas identified for savings were the heating system and lighting.

By adopting all the recommendations and changes, GEP Environmental estimated that they could reduce their carbon footprint by 232 tCO2 and save over £35,000 annually on their fuel bills. The recommendations extended from simple pipework insulation to the costlier installation of new boilers. GEP Environmental’s report specified detailed cost estimations, annual savings, and payback time, providing Crieff Hydro with all the information necessary to plan the appropriate investment.

Following this first report, Crieff Hydro Family of Hotels – made up of 12 hotel locations, employed GEP Environmental to manage their compliance of phase one of the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS). As part of an approach to implementing the EU Energy Directive, the UK Government introduced ESOS to assess the level of energy used by large businesses and identify where energy savings can be made.

As the accredited lead assessor for this scheme, GEP Environmental verified audits covering 90% of the group’s consumption – identifying areas of significant energy consumption and potential energy saving opportunities across the Crieff Hydro family of Hotels.

Following the earlier RES and ESOS audit, Crieff Hydro requested further support to prepare tender documentation for the installation of new lighting in high activity areas, a substantial energy resource saving highlighted by GEP Environmental. Replacing all light fittings with LEDs alone will offer savings of 107,000 kWh, reduce electricity costs by £10,000 and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 57 tonnes every year. The report provided the technical detail for replacing light fittings for all areas to achieve these savings.

GEP Environmental have worked closely with Crieff Hydro over the years to maximize their energy efficiency and substantially reduce their energy costs.
