Environment and Climate Emergency

2nd May 2019

GEP Environmental welcomes the motion passed by the UK Parliament on 1st May 2019 to declare an “environment and climate emergency”. We also warmly welcome the report from the Committee on Climate Change (CCC) ‘Net Zero: The UK’s contribution to stopping global warming published today, 2nd May 2019, as a clear statement of the need for a net-zero GHG target for 2050 https://www.theccc.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Net-Zero-The-UKs-contribution-to-stopping-global-warming.pdf.

The Report sets out that ‘A net-zero GHG target for 2050 will deliver on the commitment that the UK made by signing the Paris Agreement. It is achievable with known technologies, alongside improvements in people’s lives, and within the expected economic cost that Parliament accepted when it legislated the existing 2050 target for an 80% reduction from 1990. However, this is only possible if clear, stable and well-designed policies to reduce emissions further are introduced across the economy without delay. Current policy is insufficient for even the existing targets.’

GEP Environmental has been working with public and private organisations since 2004 to help them reduce their carbon footprint and improve their business performance. The CCC report makes clear that additional action will be required and GEP Environmental looks forward to supporting our clients to play their role in meeting this ambitious but achievable target.
