At GEP Environmental, we’ve been delighted to welcome new faces to the team over the past few months. Today, we’re chatting with Environmental Consultant Dominic Balian.
We’re so pleased that you’ve joined the team, Dom. Can you tell me a bit about your previous roles and experiences?
Sure. I began my career in energy procurement – working on energy efficiency projects as well as metering and monitoring projects. After that, I moved within the organisation to the Renewable Energy team. We were working on decarbonisation of energy supply, power purchase agreements and renewable alternatives to natural gas. It’s been fascinating to take that experience consultancy-side and to work with a number of different organisations on a range of projects, from procurement all the way to implementation.
What made you want to work in the Environmental sector?
I’ve always had a passion for nature – I studied Zoology before realising that I didn’t want to work in a zoo. I completed my Masters degree in Sustainability and Business when I realised that one of the best ways to combat climate change was through working with a larger organisation. I discovered my passion for consultancy when I began working in procurement, which naturally lead to working on the Climate and Carbon team.
That’s fantastic. So at GEP, what projects have you been working on, and what are you looking forward to working on in the future?
I’ve been working on a few fascinating projects. I’ve particularly enjoyed work with the Science-Based Targets initiative. I’m finding it very satisfying to help a company set an ambitious carbon reduction target, and then guide them through a carbon reduction and Net Zero action plan. The strategy side of things is really interesting – working out the areas of significant emissions production and starting there, before investigating ways to reduce an overall carbon impact. It’s also been fascinating to do so much work with the public sector – there are a lot of exciting projects being launched over the next few months that are really going to take things to the next level in terms of emissions reduction in the UK.
Thanks so much for taking the time to chat with us, Dom, and a warm welcome from the GEP Environmental team!
