Swansea Bay University Health Board New Solar Farm

23rd March 2022

The Morriston Hospital solar farm, which is being delivered through the Re:fit framework, will see almost 10,000 PV panels installed over an area of 20,000m² and, when operational, will supply over 3.5 million kWh of zero-carbon electricity to Morriston Hospital via a 3km private wire network. In addition to the carbon reduction the project will save £439,000 per annum in electricity costs.

GEP were appointed by Swansea Bay University Local Health Board to provide support for the Morriston Hospital solar farm development. GEP provided Project Management Services, supporting the development of the invitation to tender, assessment and selection of a preferred bidder through the Re:fit Energy Performance Contracting Framework.

We managed the detail design development process, reviewing detailed design information with technical due diligence, the project team through internal liaison with client departments, the Investment Grade Proposal Development ensuring that all Health Board requirements were met and developed the Business Case and Project Budgets gaining Ministerial Approval for the project, as well as providing Energy and Water Use analysis to identify options for Carbon Emissions and Utility usage reductions.

GEP were responsible to the Project Governance Board for project delivery against programme and budget and compiled regular reports for both the Health Board and Welsh Government on progress. We were successful in applying to Welsh Government Invest To Save Fund through Salix Finance for 2 phases of the project securing £13.8 m investment into the estate.
